Ferguson Commission Promotes Police Training Model

St. Louis, MO (KTRS)  Efforts are underway to promote reforms in police training proposed by the Ferguson Commission. On Thursday morning, members of the Commission joined representatives from local law enforcement for a press conference to reinforce this call to action.

Co-chair Commissioner Rich McClure says this proposed model will benefit the community. “Our communities will be safer if our police have the support and training to understand the people they serve, to respond to circumstances in ways that protect everyone, and to protect officers’ physical and well being.”

St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson says “the stakes are to high” not to adopt this increased training proposal. “I don’t think we have an option not to do it. I think we have to start at the base line that any training and that any education we can do does put the police officers at a more advantageous position, does put the community in a more advantageous position.”

The model proposed and approved by the Commission during Monday night’s meeting calls for additional hours in the areas of tactical, anti-bias, and officer wellness training.
