Summers Meals Program Offered To Area Kids

Florissant, MO (KTRS)  Operation Food Search and the St. Louis County Library are teaming up for the third year in a row to provide lunch for kids from low-income families through the “Summer Meals Program”.

On Wednesday afternoon, Joel Berg, the Executive Director of the National Anti-Hunger and Opportunity Corps, visited the Florissant Valley Branch to help expand the program. Berg said the need for this program is vital. “Forty-nine-million Americans, including 16-million American children live in homes that can’t afford enough food and unfortunately this is a problem throughout Missouri, throughout Illinois, and not just in inner cities, in suburbs, in rural areas because people just don’t earn enough to feed their families.”

Four branches of the St. Louis County Library participate in the Summer Meals program. The Florissant Valley Branch alone provides eighty meals a day, Monday through Friday to kids during the summer months.

The program is funded through the USDA and the private sector.

Anyone in need of food assistance should contact the National Anti-Hunger and Opportunity Corps at 1-866-3-HUNGRY.
