ST. LOUIS (KTRS) – Police have charged Jeffrey Williams, 20, of North St. Louis with multiple felonies after authorities say he confessed to firing the shots that wounded two police officers outside of the Ferguson police department on Thursday morning.

At a news conference Sunday afternoon, St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar and Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch announced that Williams was arrested late Saturday night following several tips from the public.

“He has acknowledged firing the shots,” McCulloch said. “It’s possible he was firing shots at someone other than the police but struck the police officers,” he added.

McCulloch said the suspect may not have been aiming for the police officers that were lined up outside of the police department following a demonstration earlier in the night. Instead, the County’s chief prosecutor said Williams claims to have had a dispute with other people at the protest.

“We’re not sure we completely buy that part of it,” McCulloch said, adding that investigation is far from over.

All told, Williams is charged with two counts of first-degree assault, one count of firing a weapon from a vehicle and three counts of armed criminal action. He is being held in the county jail on a $300,000 cash-only bond.

The two officers that were shot are out of the hospital and recovering at home. Neither are police officers for the City of Ferguson. The officer who was struck in the right shoulder is 41 and works for St. Louis County. The other is a 32-year-old officer from Webster Groves who was shot just below the eye.
