East St. Louis Mayor Speaks Out Against Layoffs

East St. Louis, IL  (KTRS)  East St. Louis’ mayor is speaking out against recent layoffs made by the city manager.

Mayor Emeka Jackson-Hicks held a news conference on Sunday to voice her concerns.

She said she was unaware of these actions taken by  City Manager Alvin Parks. “On last Thursday, September 3, our city council held its regularly scheduled committee meetings. During the finance committee discussion, I noticed that the 2015-2016 budgets were not included on our agenda, so I requested that City Manager Alvin Parks provide a status update. When I made the request, I was completely unaware that Mr. Parks would announce layoffs of 17 firefighters and 8 police officers.”

Parks, who formerly served as the mayor of East St. Louis, was sworn into the office of City Manager in August.

Meanwhile, Jackson-Hicks will host a second series of town hall meetings.

• The second meeting will be held on Monday, September 14, 2015, from 6:30 pm –
