Alton fireworks to go ahead despite heavy rains

ALTON, Ill. (AP) – Flooding on the Mississippi River has forced Alton city officials to find another launch site for their July Fourth holiday weekend fireworks show.

The Alton Telegraph reports that city leaders are still planning a Friday night fireworks show at Riverfront Park but must relocate the launch site after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers called the previous location in West Alton, Missouri, unsafe after recent heavy rains.

The new launch site is a city parcel on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River.

River flooding forced Alton to cancel its July Fourth holiday fireworks show in 2008. Flooding has also prompted officials in nearby Grafton to postpone their planned holiday fireworks display this year.
