ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The family of a prominent anthropologist killed in a crash on a New York highway says she was an adventurer who ditched an artist’s life in Manhattan to work in the remote jungles of the South Pacific.

Fifty-seven year old Nancy Sullivan was headed to a family vacation in Vermont on the night of July 16 when her rental vehicle crashed on the Taconic State Parkway. Sullivan died in the crash and her three adoptive grandsons ages 5, 8 and 10 remain hospitalized.

The New York-born anthropologist spent the past 24 years in the remote Pacific nation of Papua New Guinea working to preserve native culture and protect it from development.
