Audit: MoDOT misspent more than $7 million

(KTRS) – A new audit finds that MoDOT misspend more than $7 million in funds meant for Missouri highways.

Nearly $4 million earmarked for road work was instead used for safety grants to local entities. The department also spent nearly $2 million from road funds to settle employee discrimination lawsuits. And around $1.5 million from the fund was paid to employees on administrative leave who were later laid off. MoDOT says they were within their rights to reallocate the money, but say they will look to find other funding for some expenses.

The audit’s results come as MoDOT has warned of massive budget shortfalls that would prevent them from performing adequate maintenance on all of Missouri’s roads and bridges. Officials estimate that there will be a $123 million budget gap by 2017.
