Authorities say aircraft contained nothing hazardous

WASHINGTON (AP) – Police say nothing hazardous has been found as they inspected the small one-person helicopter that landed on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol today.
Witnesses say the aircraft made a low approach before it landed hard and bounced. The pilot was quickly arrested.
He hasn’t been identified — but a Florida postal carrier took responsibility for the stunt on a website. Doug Hughes said he was trying to draw attention to campaign finance corruption by delivering letters to all 535 members of Congress.
The open-air aircraft sported a U.S. Postal Service logo.
One witness says when the aircraft landed, police with rifles yelled at the pilot not to move, and told bystanders to run, with their heads down.
About two hours after the landing, police said a bomb squad had cleared the aircraft, and that authorities would be moving it to a secure location.
