Belleville considers eliminating “redundant” Village government

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) – Belleville city leaders want to shut down the township that shares its name and boundaries, calling the lesser-known local government unnecessary, redundant and a waste of taxpayer dollars.

Unlike most of the other 1,429 Illinois townships, this one in southern Illinois doesn’t assess property taxes or handle road maintenance. Its only role is to provide temporary financial assistance to several dozen needy families annually. The township’s administrative costs typically exceed the amount of aid given.

Such a move would require a change in state law and make Belleville only the fifth Illinois township to dissolve- and just the second since 1932. Evanston’s township dissolved in May after voters twice approved the move.

Critics say other townships could be absorbed into municipal governments to save money and reduce bureaucratic bloat.
