FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson says America needs to “de-emphasize race” as a national issue. Carson accuses President Barack Obama of taking the nation backward on race by talking about it too much.

The retired neurosurgeon addressed the issue Friday after touring Ferguson, Missouri. Riots erupted last year in the St. Louis suburb following the police shooting death of an 18-year-old black man, Michael Brown.

Carson is the only African-American candidate in the 2016 Republican field. He toured Ferguson before holding a closed-door discussion with community leaders.

He says he visited the area “because we need to de-emphasize race” and instead “emphasize respect for everybody in our society.”

Carson says Obama’s racial focus has caused the nation to regress because there are “more people complaining that they’re being treated unfairly.”
