Berkeley Police Department now equipped with body cameras

BERKELEY, Mo. (AP) – Officers with the Berkeley Police Department are now equipped with body cameras.

Chief Frank McCall told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he believes his department is the largest municipal agency in St. Louis County to have officers wearing body cameras.

Berkeley has about 34 officers, with four to five working each 12-hour shift. Three cameras were donated to the department after a police-involved shooting in December, and the city paid about $5,000 to buy 10 additional cameras.

The use of body cameras has gained attention since the shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown by a Ferguson officer in August 2014. Officer Darren Wilson was not wearing a camera during the fatal confrontation. A grand jury and the U.S. Department of Justice declined to prosecute him.
