Candidate Forum Held For Ferguson City Council Candidates

St. Louis, MO (KTRS)  Voters in Ferguson will soon be heading to the polls to decide on city council candidates in all three wards. The organization One Ferguson sponsored a City Council Candidate Forum at Greater St. Mark Family Church in north county Sunday afternoon.

The eight candidates answered questions pertaining to the crisis in Ferguson, each promising to make efforts to bring the community together.

Wesley Bell, who is running for Ward Three, says he believes that reaching out to the community will help bridge the gap. “When people feel apart of the system and they feel valued, they do come out, but too often we do things on political levels, sociological levels to alienate people, and we have to stop that.”

Bob Hudgins, who is running for Ward Two, says one of his goals is to bridge the racial gap.

“When I talk to black residents, they say we need change as a rule. When I talk to white residents, I hear things like I don’t believe the police are that bad. I don’t believe the DOJ report. That is a stark chasm between groups. All I can I say, I want to foster associations, affiliations, meetings, town halls. I want to use the community center differently and that’s a start.”

Economic development was another topic addressed by the candidates.  Adrienne Hawkins, who is one of four candidates running for Ward One, says this is one of her main priorities.  “I’m bringing in the Black Chamber of Commerce. They’re going to help us attract businesses to the area, especially on the West Florissant end.”

Another candidate forum is planned for later this month. The Municipal Election is April 7th.

Candidates running for Ward 1 are Ella Jones, Doyle McClellan, Adrienne Hawkins, and Mike McGrath.

Candidates running for Ward 2 are Brian Fletcher and Robert “Bob” Hudgins.

Candidates running for Ward 3 are Wesley Bell and Lee Smith.
