ST. LOUIS (KTRS) – More than 500 student-athletes from the St. Louis Public Schools were honored at a luncheon Wednesday. High school athletes with a 3.25 GPA or higher were eligible to attend the event, which was sponsored by the St. Louis Rams.

The students heard speeches by Monsanto Senior Counsel Reuben Shelton and Rams linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar. In addition, students were able to interact with role models who sat with them at their tables.

“I thought I was going to be a professional Tennis player,” said table role model Dr. Rick Lehman, “but when I couldn’t make it at the pro level, I realized I had to go back to school to pick up the education I left on the [tennis] courts.”

Lehman, a distinguished orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, told students to take advantage of any sports scholarships that they are offered.

“A scholarship is going to carry you through life. It will help you get a good education that will almost certainly lead to a better job with more income,” said Lehman, the founder of the U.S. Center for Sports Medicine and host of “Sports Medicine” on KTRS.
