Cleanup continues at site of Illinois train derailment

GALENA, Ill. (AP) – Rail traffic has resumed past the site where a BNSF Railway freight train derailed near Galena and caught fire.

BNSF spokesman Andy Williams on Monday said six railcars remain to be cleared away, with efforts under way to make certain the cars have been emptied of oil.

Twenty-one of the train’s 105 cars derailed Thursday in an area where the Galena River meets the Mississippi. No one was injured.

Brad Benning of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says oil spilled from the tanks has been removed. He says there will be activity at the site for several weeks, including the testing of soil and the taking of water samples.

Williams says oil has not been found in the nearby rivers. He adds the cause of the derailment hasn’t been determined.
