WASHINGTON (AP) – Democratic presidential candidates gave a meaningful public nod to the Black Lives Matter movement in their first televised debate.

The candidates invoked its slogan and raised the core concerns stemming from police killings of African-Americans. Protesters have articulated those concerns in disrupting some of the candidates’ campaign events.

Observers note that the candidates discussed some issues that the protesters have complained about, even though there is no minority candidate – a rarity for Democrats.

The deaths of unarmed black men have been topics of great interest since the shootings of Trayvon Martin in 2012 in Florida and Michael Brown in 2014 in Missouri.

Two of next year’s Democratic debates are set for Charleston, South Carolina, and Miami. Issues directly affecting black and Latino voters will likely come up.
