DOJ Report finds issues, list suggestions on how to improve police response after Michael Brown shooting

(KTRS) – The US Department of Justice has released the third of four planned reports on the police response to unrest in Ferguson last year.

-The most recent report provides a list of recommendations and observations about the pressure that police operated under. Amond the issues noted by officials: police displayed poor communication and changes in leadership of the reponse bred confusion and mistrust. The report recommends the use of Joint Information Center.

The report also noted the protests were as different as night and day; specificially within 48 hours of the shooting of Michael Brown demonstrations went from mostly peaceful during the daytime hours to violence and looting overnight.

Federal officials also noted the need to protect individual police officers while finding ways to hold them accountable. They suggested replacing officer’s name tags with badges with identifying numbers.

The department’s fourth report is due out in the coming weeks.
