Ex-Rep. Wallace named to Missouri education board

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — A former southern Missouri lawmaker and school superintendent has been appointed to the State Board of Education.

Gov. Jay Nixon on Friday appointed Maynard Wallace to fill the last vacant position on the eight-member education board.

Wallace is a Republican from rural Thornfield in Ozark County who served in the state House from 2003 to 2011. Before that, he worked as a superintendent in the Forsyth and Ava school districts and as a principal, teacher and coach.

His appointment runs until July 1, 2016. Because the Legislature is not in session, Wallace can begin serving immediately, but he still will be subject to Senate confirmation when lawmakers convene in January.

The state board sets standards for public school districts and personnel and distributes state funding
