(KTRS) – The Department of Justice has chosen St. Louis to receive federal funds to hire new police officers.

The $1.8 million COPS Hiring Program Grant will provide the money for 15 new officers. Congressman Lacy Clay issued a statement announcing the grant, but saying he will push the DOJ for additional money for “more personnel, better training and support, and body cameras for all officers.”

In 2014, Mayor Francis Slay requested funding for 160 new officers, but that plan was rejected. A spokesperson for the mayor says they are going after every opportunity for additional funding and “every little bit counts.” The COPS grant represents new money for the city.
