Ferguson Holds National Night Out

Ferguson, MO (KTRS)  Moving past the civil unrest continues to be a work in progress for the city of Ferguson.

That was the goal of Tuesday night’s annual National Night Out at the Ferguson Community Center.

Ferguson Police Officer Sean Gibbons, who helped organize the event, says he believes this event plays an important role in moving Ferguson forward. “Unfortunately over the last year we’ve had some hard feelings in the community between community members and what events like this do is bring everybody together, so there’s an understanding and communication and we get past those things and move on.”

Ferguson resident Kiana Harold says she believes the community is healing. She added,  “I think the ones who disagree aren’t really active in the community.”

Interim Ferguson Police Chief Andre Anderson says he agrees. “I think that this year is going to build on the years to come. Each year I think things are going to get better, but collectively we all have to do our part to make improvements.”

Anderson also expressed concern over the upcoming anniversary of the Grand Jury announcement on November 24th. “We’re not anticipating a whole lot of challenges…at least we’re hoping it’s not that way, but we’re asking the community to come in and help us ensure that nothing gets out of control.”

The theme of this year’s National Night Out was “Giving Crime & Drugs a Going Away Party.”
