Ferguson Police Chief To Resign

St. Louis, MO (KTRS)  Embattled Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson is on his way out. During a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Mayor James Knowles announced that Jackson and the City of Ferguson have agreed to a mutual separation.

Jackson’s resignation will take effect on March 19th.

Lieutenant Colonel Al Eickhoff, who was hired in August, will serve as acting police chief until a permanent police chief is found.

Jackson will receive severance pay and health benefits for one year.

Meanwhile, protesters and supporters gathered outside of Ferguson City Hall during the press conference.

Kayla Reed of the Organization For Black Struggle, says she doesn’t believe Jackson’s resignation is the answer. “Chief Jackson was not the architect of all the inhumane treatment that happened in the last seven months. I think they are using him as a scapegoat to take the focus off the DOJ report shows that Chief Jackson doesn’t pull people over.  Chief Jackson is not the traffic police, Chief Jackson is not the one using excessive force. These are officers in blue shirts.”

Reed says she believes the answer is to dissolve the Ferguson Police Department.

William Peipers, who considers himself as pro-law enforcement and pro-justice, says he believes Jackson should stay in command. “He’s a man of integrity. He’s led this department and this city. He was entrusted with the position of the joint chief of command with the whole Ferguson issue and he did a wonderful job there.”

Meanwhile, a large crowd demonstrated last night outside of the Ferguson Police Department.
