FRANKLIN GROVE, Ill. (AP) – Illinois has its first baby wild bison in about 200 years.

The Chicago Tribune reports the bison was born at the Nachusa Grasslands prairie restoration project about 95 miles west of Chicago. Project director Bill Kleiman says he was giving a tour to friends Mondays when one of them spotted the bison calf.

Restoration ecologist Cody Considine says the bison birth was a surprise. It was known that some of the 30 bison at Nachusa that came from an Iowa preserve late last year were pregnant, but births were expected at the end of May.

Considine says the mother and calf “looked great,” and that staff have only looked at the baby bison through binoculars from several hundred yards away.
