Gov. Nixon considers tax incentive for data storage centers

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – Gov. Jay Nixon will consider a new version of a tax incentive for data storage centers he vetoed last year over concerns about effects on local and state revenue.

The Missouri House and Senate on Thursday approved a measure that would allow a sales and use tax exemption for equipment, utilities and materials purchased for a data storage center expansion or construction.

Republican Rep. Kevin Austin, of Springfield, says Missouri is losing to other states because there is no incentive despite low energy costs.

Data center owners would have to invest a set amount, create new jobs and apply to the state’s Department of Economic Development to get the exemption.

The bill also requires the incentives be paid back if they do not comply with the requirements.
