Groundbreaking Ceremony Held For Job Center At Former Ferguson Quik Trip

Ferguson, MO (KTRS)  The former site of the Ferguson QuikTrip that .became a symbol of civil unrest will soon have new life.  A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Thursday for the Urban League Community Empowerment Center, which will provide educational and job training services.

Urban League President and CEO Michael McMillan calls this a historic occasion for the St. Louis-area. “As you know, this site served as ground zero in the tragic events that happened in Ferguson in the last eleven months and we are proud of the fact that from all of the support that we’ve received from the community that we can turn this site that had burned down the day after Michael Brown died into a phoenix rising out of the ashes.”

Hundreds were in attendance, including St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger and State Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal.

Nadal spoke on what this means for those who have lacked opportunities. “We want to take the young people who were on this corner who with me protesting for equal rights and the first amendment and yes, some of them were gang members and yes some of them were felons, but ya know what, everyone deserves an opportunity.”

The center is expected to be completed sometime in 2016.
