Harsh winter means poor local peach crop

A metro-east orchard famous for it’s pick-your-own fruit seasons says visitors won’t be able to pick their own peaches this year.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports that the long, harsh winter had significantly damaged the peach crop across southwestern Illinois.

Chris Eckert, president of Eckert’s Orchard tells the paper that he feels fortunate that his orchard will have any peach crop at all.  Eckert says he expects less than half the usual harvest.  He says the crop will be too small to fill wholesale orders for other retailers, so the peaches will only be available at Eckert’s Country Store.
