Historic designation sought for Murphysboro courthouse

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (AP) – Continued repairs to an aging southern Illinois courthouse have some elected leaders hoping for a federal historic designation that could make it easier to pay for the building’s preservation.

The Carbondale Southern Illinoisan reports that Jackson County’s governing board has enlisted two consultants to nominate the county courthouse in Murphysboro to the National Register of Historic Places. A state committee must first approve the nomination.

The 87-year-old building was built after the deadly Tri-State Tornado in 1925. Its current problems range from burst pipes and mold damage to crumbling tuck-pointing.
A heavy snowfall followed by a fast warm-up in mid-February caused flooding that displaced staff and records from a first-floor clerk’s office and cost $65,000 to fix.
