House panel OKs federal-funding plan over Rauner’s protest

( KTRS ) An Illinois House committee has endorsed a plan to spend $5 billion in federal money on social services that includes state funding.

An appropriations committee approved the idea 10-1 Tuesday. Four Republicans voted “present” in protest. GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner says he’ll veto legislation if it includes state funds during a summer-long impasse over the budget.

With no budget, the state is unable to spend available federal money. The Senate approved the proposal last week. But in the House, Democrats added $585 million in general revenue spending.

Republicans objected because no one knows how much money is going out for required services despite not having a budget for the fiscal year that began July 1.

The House plans to vote on the legislation Wednesday.
