(KTRS/AP) – A new law will allow terminally ill patients in Illinois to use experimental drugs that could help them.

The bill, signed by Governor Bruce Rauner today, was bipartisan and allows patients who qualify to ask pharmaceutical companies for drugs or devices that have only received early federal approval. Supporters say the plan allows people with debilitating diseases to seek help from previously unavailable sources that could provide relief from symptoms or even extend their lives.

The so-called right to try law has been adopted by more than a dozen states in the last two years.
