Illinois committee receives proposed fracking rules

St. Louis, MO (KTRS) – Proposed rules for fracking and oil drilling are in the hands of an Illinois legislative committee.

The report follows lengthy delays and complaints from both industry groups and environmentalists. Industry officials say southern Illinois has rich deposits of natural gas, but a draft of the rules was heavily criticized by environmentalists. The department has since been criticized by fracking supporters, who’d hoped that drilling permits would be issued this summer.

The Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, has 45 days to act on the proposed rules. If no action is taken, the rules can take effect.
