Illinois Democrats move ahead with workers’ comp changes

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – An Illinois House committee controlled by Democrats has endorsed changes to state law requiring employers to pay medical costs for injured workers.

Democrats say the measures are an attempt at compromise with Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner in a stalemate over the $36 billion state budget. But Rauner’s office declared the initiative “phony.”

The measures were approved without Republican support. They deal with issues Rauner has said are needed to the workers’ compensation program.

One item would require the work that employees do to “cause” an injury – a change in the no-fault law. But business organizations say it’s meaningless because it could be any cause.

Another item makes it more difficult for a traveling employee to receive injury compensation.

A full House vote is expected Thursday afternoon.
