Illinois Health Officials Urge Public To Take Precautions Against West Nile Virus

Springfield, IL  (KTRS)  The Illinois Department of Public Health is urging the public to take precautions against the West Nile Virus.

With the warmer weather, we will start encountering mosquitoes and according to health officials, that means the West Nile Virus. You can avoid getting West Nile by practicing the three R’s – reduce, repel and report.

REDUCE exposure – minimize being outdoors when mosquitoes are most active, especially between dusk and dawn. REPEL – when outdoors, wear shoes and socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt, and apply insect repellent that contains DEET. Finally, REPORT dead birds to your local health department.

Back in 2002, Illinois led the nation with the most human West Nile cases and deaths. Additional information about West Nile virus is available online at  www.dph.illinois.gov.
