Illinois House Democrats defy governor, push own budget

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – The Democratic-led Illinois House passed a budget for next year in defiance of Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s wish for pro-business legislation he wants.

Republicans howled in protest Wednesday after Democrats stopped debate on the budget plan and voted to pass it 63-53 vote. The state has been without a spending plan for 11 months.

Rauner has already indicated he will veto the bill if it reaches his desk. The budget now heads to the Democratic-controlled Senate. It includes money for public schools so a full veto would jeopardize their ability to open this fall.

Illinois has operated without a budget since July 1 after Rauner vetoed an out-of-balance spending plan. He demanded union-weakening changes and other proposals in exchange for signing off for a tax increase to close a $5 billion deficit.
