EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) – An Illinois woman serving a life sentence for the deaths of her two baby daughters is asking Gov. Bruce Rauner for clemency.

Paula Sims’ attorney Jed Stone has argued that the former Alton woman suffered from postpartum psychosis at the time the two babies died, one in 1986 and 1989. Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Gibbons says he will oppose the petition, which Sims signed Oct. 16.

The 56-year-old Sims was convicted in 1990 of first-degree murder. She is serving her term at the Logan Correctional Center.

Sims’ request now goes to the Illinois Prison Review Board. There will be a public hearing Jan. 12 in Springfield.

This is the second time that Sims has asked for clemency. Then-Gov. Pat Quinn denied her request in 2006.
