Kasparov to speak at SLU commencement

St. Louis, MO ( AP ) Chess legend Garry Kasparov will be the speaker for Saint Louis University’s commencement on May 16.

The university announced the speaker Thursday. About 2,700 students will graduate in a ceremony at Chaifetz Arena.

Kasparov was 22 when he became the youngest person become world chess champion, and he held that title for nearly a decade. He retired from competitive chess in 2005 to become involved in the pro-democracy movement in Russia.

Kasparov will receive an honorary doctor of laws degree, along with Anita Lyons Bonds, who in 1950 became one of the university’s first black graduates, and Gene Kranz a 1954 graduate who was NASA’s mission control commander when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon.
