ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. (AP) – A sexual assault victim is suing three companies, claiming that her assault by a cable repairman could have been prevented if better background checks had been performed.

The woman’s attorney, Adam Goffstein, claims that Charter Communications and two of its subcontractors, Broadband Infrastructure Connection and Communications Unlimited Contracting Services Inc., would have learned that Hederle fabricated his previous job experiences had they checked with previous employers or personal references before hiring him.

A spokeswoman for Charter said in a statement that all employees are required to pass drug and alcohol screening, as well as criminal and financial background checks.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the victim was attacked at her O’Fallon apartment in December two days after he answered a service call there. Hederle was sentenced to 75 years in prison for the crime.
