AT&T volunteers gathered to install an open-ended ship platform and hopscotch area as an expansion to the center’s playground. Katie Rahn, executive director at SouthSide, says it’s a natural playground with open-ended materials so kids can creatively explore and use their imaginations.

“They all jumped on the boat and pretended they were in the ocean looking out for sharks and swimming off the boat,” Rahn said. “So they’re having a great time.”

AT&T retiree Donald Marek says a $5,000 grant from the Marketing Research Education Foundation made this effort possible. 20151019-IMG_5861

“[AT&T volunteers] would use that money for a service day,” Marek said. “We came here this morning, and we built two pieces of playground equipment in the back and now we’re building shelves for the folks.”

SouthSide Early Childcare Center serves more than 130 mostly low-income preschool students.
