Man and boy die on hike in Arizona; police believe boy was going for help

GILA BEND, Ariz. (AP) – Authorities found the bodies of a man and his 12-year-old grandson several miles apart on a desert trail in central Arizona and believe the boy died while going for help.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office says the two had gone hiking and their bodies were discovered Wednesday night in mountainous desert near Gila Bend, about 50 miles southwest of Phoenix.

Sheriff’s spokesman Chris Hegstrom identified the victims as 63-year-old Thomas Gillespie of Tucson and Robert Miller of Prescott Valley. Officials are determining a cause of death.

A search began after a woman called officials Wednesday afternoon to report her father and son had not been heard from since Tuesday morning.

Hegstrom says a hotel manager where the two were staying said they left Tuesday morning to go hiking.
