markus-golden-interceptionCOLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri senior DE Markus Golden (St. Louis, Mo.) has been named the Southeastern Conference’s football Defensive Player of the Week for his performance Saturday at Tennessee, as announced Monday night by the league office.

Golden (who, on Sunday, was named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week) continued his stellar play down the stretch as he led a very impressive defensive effort as Mizzou claimed a critical 29-21 road win to clinch no worse than a tie for the SEC Eastern Division title.  Mizzou’s defense held a red-hot Tennessee offense in check most of the night, keeping the Vols to 279 yards of offense and just 14 points (Tennessee scored seven points off of a fake field goal), after UT had averaged 47.5 points and 578.0 yards of offense in its two previous games.

Golden was one of the main conspirators, as he notched a pair of quarterback sacks (for the 2nd-straight game), and was credited with 2.5 tackles for loss, 6 tackles in all, 2 quarterback pressures and a fumble recovery as part of his busy night.

Golden was big when the plays counted the most, as he had one of his sacks and both of his pressures on 3rd down, while he also made two tackles on 3rd down which came short of the line to gain, meaning he forced three punts and two field goal attempts in those five snaps.

Golden now has 8.5 sacks on the season (ranking 5th in the SEC) and 14.0 tackles for loss (3rd in the SEC), as the Tigers lead the league in both categories overall, and rank 4th nationally in sacks (3.64 avg.) and 7th nationally in tackles for loss (7.8 avg.).

The 17th-ranked Tigers host the Arkansas Razorbacks this Friday at Faurot Field/Memorial Stadium in a 1:30 p.m. game.  A win for Mizzou would put the Tigers into the SEC Championship Game (Dec. 6th) for the second-straight year.

This marks the eighth time a Tiger has won a weekly SEC award in 2014.  The list of winners includes: Offensive Player of the Week – Maty Mauk (Sept. 6), Russell Hansbrough (Nov. 15); Defensive Player of the Week – Shane Ray (Sept. 13), Markus Golden (Nov. 22); Defensive Lineman of the Week – Shane Ray (Sept. 27Oct. 18, Nov. 1); Special Teams Player of the Week – Marcus Murphy (Oct. 18).
