ST. LOUIS – (KTRS) St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay signed the Veterans Preference Bill into law today. The new law provides preferential treatment for veterans when applying for jobs with the City.

Today’s signing follows a voter-approved charter amendment back in November that allows veterans of all military branches to receive up to ten additional points when they successfully pass the City’s civil service exam.

“We know that veterans are already dedicated to serving others, which is exactly what City government does,” Mayor Slay said. “I am proud to give a hiring preference to the men and women who have served our country and who return with proven skills, aptitude for teamwork, and a deep sense of commitment.”

The bill was sponsored in the Board of Aldermen by Jeffery Boyd, a retired Master Sergeant in the U.S. Military.

“Our veterans have made enormous sacrifices on our behalf,” Alderman Boyd said. “By serving our nation, they did their duty. Now, by hiring them, we are doing ours.”

Boyd was joined by Aldermen Frank Williamson and Ken Ortmann at today’s signing, along with several other veterans employed by the City.
