Missouri 911 services could see revenue from proposed cellphone fee

(KTRS) – Missouri residents could see a new monthly charge on their cell phone bills, if state lawmakers approve a bill.

The proposal allows local governments to issue a maximum of a $1.50 monthly fee to help 911 systems update outdated services. The House overwhelmingly approved the bill today. Supporters say that as landline use decreases, the emergency systems need a new revenue stream to keep technology current.

The legislation also calls for a statewide 3-percent charge on the sales of prepaid phones. The bill now heads to the Senate.
