Missouri House overrides Nixon’s veto on unemployment cuts

(KTRS ) Missouri’s Republican-controlled House has voted to override a veto of a measure that would cut the weeks of available jobless benefits to one of the lowest amounts in the U.S.

House members voted 109-53 for the measure, which also needs a two-thirds majority in the Senate to win final approval.

The bill vetoed by Governor. Jay Nixon would cut the weeks of benefits available for laid-off workers from the current 20 to as low as 13 if the statewide unemployment rate remains below 6 percent.

Only Florida and North Carolina have minimums lower than 13 weeks, but those would kick in only if state unemployment drops below 5 percent.

Democrat opponents say the bill will hurt those who struggle to find work. Republican supporters say it will reduce costs for employers.
