MEXICO, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri mother whose 9-year-old son was diagnosed last year with diabetes is helping spread the word of a national effort to make Halloween less scary for children with food allergies.

Sara Robertson told the Mexico Ledger that anything more than a miniature candy bar can require her son, Nate, to get an insulin shot. The Mexico, Missouri, speech therapist says the Teal Pumpkin Project helps make the holiday fun for children with food allergies.

The project was started last year by the national advocacy group Food Allergy Research and Education. FARE has a goal of getting 100,000 households to participate this year by placing teal-colored pumpkins on their porch or lawn to indicate they have non-food treats available for those who can’t eat candy.
