New Initiative Offered In St. Louis To Help The Homeless

St. Louis, MO (KTRS)  There’s a new initiative in the City of St. Louis to help the homeless.  Mayor Francis Slay, joined Eddie Roth, the Director of Human Services for St. Louis, and several homeless service providers, announced Thursday afternoon that two new emergency shelters will be offered nightly, 365 days a year to accommodate the homeless.

Slay had this to say at the news conference at the Gateway 180 shelter. “There’s no exact way to address every situation, but what we’re committed to is a continuing care network, a network of individuals and organizations who care about those who are out on the street, who have the resources to provide a new beginning, not a last resort.”

The shelter at Gateway 180 will accommodate women and children and the Salvation Army and Windsor Transitional Housing will serve men at the 12th and Park Center. Operations of these shelters will begin on Sunday.

The initiative also offers helping the homeless find permanent housing.  In addition, St. Patrick Center will expand their night program for women to add five more beds to their shelter.  Pending approval Doorways will add an extra shelter bed to it’s permanent housing facility in the Central West End.  Doorways accommodates individuals with AIDS and HIV.

Gateway 180 will provide shelter for 50 women and children and the 12th and Park Center will accommodate 125 men.
