Something new flying at Lambert...bees

Lambert Airport will soon have some new tenants...bees.

The St. Louis Airport Authority has approved a three-year lease with Robins Apiaries to keep bee hives on a 400 square foot patch of land near a seldom-used runway. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the airport will collect $75 a year in rent from 76 year old beekeeper Jim Robins.

A plentiful supply of white dutch clover blooming near billion dollar W-1-W project runway drew Robins to the site.  The runway opened in 2006, but hasn't seen much traffic since TWA filed for bankruptcy and American Airlines yanked hub status away from Lambert.

Lambert will be the third major US airport to host bee hives.  Chicago's O'Hare International and Seattle-Tacoma International both have significant bee operations.
