Politics makes strange bedfellows, and that's certainly the case in the Illinois Governor's race.

Former East St. Louis mayor Carl Officer tells the Belleville News-Democrat that he's formed a SuperPAC to support Republican Bruce Rauner's challenge to Democratic Governor Pat Quinn. The group is called Democrats and Independents for Rauner.

SuperPACs emerged in 2010 and can raise and spend unlimited funds to campaign for or against candidates as long as the PAC doesn't coordinate their efforts with the candidates themselves.

Officer tells the paper he expects criticism from fellow Democrats, but he believes the state needs a totally different approach if everyone is to have a chance at the American Dream.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Former U.S. Attorney Catherine Hanaway says she is running for Missouri governor in 2016.

Hanaway's announcement Monday makes her the first Republican to enter the race. Democratic Attorney General Chris Koster has been building a gubernatorial campaign since last year.

The office will be open because Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon is barred by term limits from seeking re-election.

Hanaway is a former state lawmaker from St. Louis County who in 2003 became the first women to serve as Missouri House speaker after helping Republicans win a majority in the chamber.

She lost a bid for secretary of state in 2004 but was appointed the next year by President George W. Bush to serve as U.S. attorney for the eastern Missouri. She held that position until April 2009.

CHICAGO (AP) - Former White House chief of staff Bill Daley is making his Illinois gubernatorial bid official.

He's set to remove his "exploratory committee" label Tuesday by filing paperwork with the Illinois Board of Elections. So far, he's Gov. Pat Quinn's only 2014 Democratic primary challenger.

In a video on his campaign website, Daley says the fact that the state Legislature adjourned in May without finding a solution to the pension crisis or voting on same-sex marriage represents a "dysfunction."

He says he's running because of the positive response he's received and he'll work seven days a week.

The brother and son of two longtime Chicago mayors formed his exploratory committee last month, but has already been acting like a candidate. He's stepped out to criticize Quinn's leadership and made statewide tours.
