SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Gov. Pat Quinn's administration wants lawmakers to approve $221 million in extra funds to spend this fiscal year. The request comes on top of the $35 billion budget the Legislature approved in May.

The Springfield Bureau of Lee Enterprises reports that a draft of the request includes $112 million to pay back wages owed to 25,000 state workers.

Another $40.5 million was requested for the Illinois Department of Corrections and $31 million for the Department of Human Services and state police to help implement the state's new concealed carry law. The state's Emergency Management Agency wants $6 million to help cover April flooding.

Lawmakers heard some spending requests during the fall session that began last week but have yet to vote on them.

1 arrested after stabbing at Indiana University

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Indiana University says one person has been arrested in connection with an early-morning stabbing at a campus apartment building.

University spokesman Mark Land said university police arrested 18-year-old Zesen Shen at about 8 a.m. Sunday at the Tulip Tree Apartments. Land said police believe Shen and another suspect fought with a 20-year-old IU student in the apartment parking lot around 3:30 a.m.

University police Lt. Craig Munroe told the Indianapolis Star the student was stabbed in the back. Land said the student was taken to IU Health hospital in Bloomington and his injury is not life-threatening.

Campus police are still looking for the other suspect and are investigating.

The school gave students the all clear around 7 a.m. CDT. Previously, students were asked to stay indoors after the stabbing.

Scientists dig for fossils in LA a century later

Sunday, 27 October 2013 09:19 Published in National News

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Scientists are still digging for Ice Age fossils in the heart of Los Angeles after a century of discoveries. So much has been uncovered from the La Brea Tar Pits that crews have a backlog of bones to clean and sort through.

Officials at the George C. Page Museum celebrate 100 years of excavation on Monday with a ceremony. Since 1913, some 5.5 million bones representing more than 600 species of animals and plants have been recovered.

Fossils finds include mammoths, mastodons, saber-toothed cats and other creatures that lived 11,000 to 50,000 years ago.

Excavators have been more careful in recent decades to preserve not just the larger bones, but also the smaller plants, insects and rodents that provide a glimpse of the past environment.
