Robotics competition to stay in St. Louis through 2017

St. Louis officials were happy to announce that the national student robotics championship will continue to call St. Louis home.

The FIRST Robotics Championship inked a new three-year deal that will keep the event at the Edward Jones Dome through 2017. FIRST said that it reaches an estimated 300,000 kids from more than 60 countries in four K-12 robotics programs. The FIRST organization picked St. Louis from a group of cities vying for the conference.

The 2014 championships are set for April 23-26.

 

Police ID victim in overnight car crash

Police have identified the victim in a fatal car crash in North St. Louis.

Police say four people were in a speeding SUV on North Broadway near East Grand around 1 AM, when the driver lost control. The SUV hit a pole, flipped over, and landed on top of a car parked at a nearby gas station. 32-year old Corey Criswell was sitting in a back seat and was ejected from the vehicle. Criswell was taken to the hospital where he died.

Witnesses told police the SUV was racing with another car before the accident. 

Elderly man gets high school diploma decades late

JACKSON, Mo. (AP) - Sixty-years after Dean Percival's high school classmates graduated, he now his diploma, too.

The Southeast Missourian reports that Percival was presented his diploma from Axtell High School in Kansas during a ceremony Friday in southeast Missouri, where he now lives.

Axtell principal Bob Bartkoski made the 600-mile trip to give Percival, of Cape Girardeau, the diploma. He told about 50 friends and relatives it is based on Percival's life experiences and accomplishments.

Percival dropped out of school in the 10th grade to help support his family, which included five siblings.

Percival's career was mostly with sign companies in several places, including Cape Girardeau.

Now 78, he wore a paper mortar and tassel as he received the framed diploma.
