BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont man accused of committing war crimes in his native Bosnia 21 years ago and lying to U.S. immigration authorities about them has been ordered held pending trial.
The Burlington Free Press reports a judge made that order Monday in the case of Edin Sakoc, citing a high risk to flee. A defense lawyer had said he expected he'd be released.
Sakoc lives in Burlington, Vermont's biggest city. He denies the charges in a two-count indictment.
The 54-year-old Bosnian Muslim is accused of raping a Serbian woman, aiding in the killings of two elderly women she had been caring for and burning the house where they were staying. He could face 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 if convicted.
BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A southwestern Illinois judge who resigned after being accused of federal gun and drug charges has agreed to have his law license suspended.
The Belleville News-Democrat reports that the Illinois Supreme Court this month approved of the action against former St. Clair County Circuit Judge Michael Cook. He was involved in a scandal involving another judge's cocaine death.
The suspension order states Cook was charged with a crime involving moral turpitude. It says he signed an affidavit voluntarily giving up his law license on an interim basis.
Cook has pleaded not guilty to charges he possessed heroin and had a gun while illegally using controlled substances.
Investigators say Cook was at a western Illinois hunting lodge in March with prosecutor-turned-judge Joe Christ when Christ died from a cocaine overdose.
Police will not say if there is any connection between two smash and grab burglaries that were discovered this morning.
The first occurred at 4:30 AM when a group of thieves drove a pickup truck through the front of Sam Light Loans at the corner of Olive and Jefferson. The criminals left the truck in the building, then drove off in another pickup.
Just over an hour later a similar truck drove through the front of a north county Stop and Shop. Authorities said items were taken from the store. The truck used in that crime was found several blocks away and had been reported stolen.
These are the latest two smash-and-grab crimes reported in recent months.
