Boeing notifies bidding sites about 777X status

Saturday, 21 December 2013 08:06 Published in Local News

CHICAGO (AP) — Boeing says it has begun telling states whether they're still in the running to build its new 777X.

Boeing has gotten proposals from 22 states including Missouri that all want to build the plane. Boeing says it is narrowing the list down and is telling each location its status in the process. Boeing isn't releasing the list publicly.

The company says it expects to pick a location early next year.

Boeing began looking for a new location to build the successor to its popular 777 after union workers in Washington state rejected a deal that would have kept the work there. The 777X is expected to bring thousands of well-paying jobs to wherever it is assembled.

Boeing is aiming to deliver the plane in 2020.

Bel-Nor Elementary School closes for good

Friday, 20 December 2013 17:35 Published in Local News
The school bell rang for one last time today at Bel-Nor Elementary School.

The Normandy School District is closing the school because they can no longer afford to keep the school open. The 300 students and dozens of teachers will be transferred to other schools in the district. The budget crunch happened when Normandy lost its accreditation and was forced to pay the tuition and transportation costs for the hundreds of students who transferred to other schools.

Educators do not support the decision to close the school mid-year. Administrators say closing the school was the only way to pay bills through the end of the year.

Judge strikes down Utah's same-sex marriage ban

Friday, 20 December 2013 15:42 Published in National News
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A federal judge has struck down Utah's same-sex marriage ban, saying it is unconstitutional.

U.S. District Judge Robert J. Shelby issued a 53-page ruling Friday saying Utah's law passed by voters in 2004 violates gay and lesbian couples' rights to due process and equal protection under the 14th Amendment.

Shelby says the state failed to show that allowing same-sex marriages would affect opposite-sex marriages in any way, and the state's unsupported fears and speculations are insufficient to justify deny allowing same-sex marriages.

Attorneys for the state argued that Utah's law promotes the state's interest in "responsible procreation" and the "optimal mode of child-rearing."

The lawsuit was brought by three gay and lesbian couples in Utah.

Many similar court challenges are pending in other states, but Utah's has been closely watched because of the state's history of staunch opposition to gay marriage as the home of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
