BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — The Boulder County Coroner's Office says the climbing death of a 20-year-old Missouri man in Rocky Mountain National Park was an accident.
The Daily Camera reports Paul Nahon of Springfield died after falling about 150 feet from the Narrows on the Keyhole Route on Longs Peak on August 15th. The route had ice in several spots.
Nahon, a 2011 graduate of Glendale High School in Springfield, won state tennis titles in 2010 and 2011 and held the record for most tennis wins in Missouri Class Two high school history with an overall record of 117-7.
He had recently transferred to Colorado College.
Missouri U.S. Senator Roy Blunt says Nahon worked as an intern in his Washington office over the summer.
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) — The dogs and cats at the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri aren't just sitting around in their pens while waiting to be adopted.
The society in Cape Girardeau has begun a kennel enrichment program to reduce the stress for animals. The program includes playing music, using oils to stimulate dogs' sense of smell and providing the animals with different toys and activities to keep them moving. As an added bonus, potential owners can see the animals being playful.
The Southeast Missourian reports the games include "Cheerios from Heaven," for dogs, when a staffer throws cereal in the air and lets the dogs find it. For cats, toys made of feathers and other items are hung in kennels to give the animals something to rub on and bat around.
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Missouri National Guard is processing requests from same-sex partners for military ID cards.
A Pentagon policy taking effect in early September makes same-sex spouses of gay military members eligible for health care and other benefits that also are available to opposite-sex partners. The decision does not apply to unmarried gay partners.
Missouri National Guard spokeswoman Major Tammy Spicer says the guard is following the Department of Defense's policy and processes requests for those who can provide proof of marriage. She says ID cards have been issued to same-sex partners but that the exact number of couples who received the IDs was not available this weekend.
Officials in other states have refused to issue the ID cards at their facilities.
