   The new Common Core education standards are meeting local resistance before they've even been implemented in Missouri.

   About 150 people in the Lindbergh School District attended an informational meeting held last night.  But the state education official was heckled while she tried to explain the new standards.  The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Maureen Clancy-May was met with calls to "tell the truth" and questions about using kids as a science experiment.  

   Missouri is one of 45 states that have adopted the Common Core standard, a set of national goals for reading, writing and math skills.  

   Many at last night's meeting wanted to know why the state Legislature wasn't involved in the decision to adopt the standard.  

   Legislatures in several states, including Missouri, are now debating a repeal.

   Granite City police say they have made an arrest in the murder of a 13 year old boy.  

   Clayton Veninga had been sitting on a Cleveland Boulevard porch around 9:30 pm Wednesday night when he was shot.  

   Police say this suspect is an adult male who was an acquaintance of Veninga's.  No word as to what led to the shooting, but police say this was not an accidental or random act.  

   Assistant Police Chief Jeff Connor says the public has been instrumental in helping solve the crime.

   Charges are expected later this morning.  

   Earlier Thursday evening, a large group of family and friends came together for a vigil in Veninga’s honor.  They stood in the rain, some clutching umbrellas, others just getting wet, as they burned candles and shared stories about Veninga's love of sports and the promising future he no longer has.  They also offered prayers for the teen's family and for an end to violence in their community.  

   P.E. & F. Inc., a St. Louis establishment, is recalling approximately 123 pounds of frozen, ready-to-eat meatballs due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

   The following products are subject to recall: 15-oz. packages of "Fazio's Meatballs"

   Each package has a lot code of "041114," and bears the establishment number "EST. 13051" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products were produced on April 11, 2013, and sold at retail locations in the St. Louis area. 

   The problem was discovered by FSIS routine sampling for Listeria monocytogenes. The company inadvertently did not hold the product pending test results. FSIS and the company have received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of these products.

   Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. However, listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact a health care provider.
